The Gemstone Inlay Collection brings a light, contemporary expression to traditional everyday vessels through restrained color, clear structure, and finely preserved traces of the hand.
In October 2026, ceramic artist Wu Xihong received the Best Choice Award at the PWS Ceramic Hub Creative Market in Jingdezhen. Selected by art historian Hsingyuan Tsao, the award recognizes creativity, innovation, and excellence in the artist's market presentation.
Points, Lines, and the Vessel
The works recognized on this occasion come from Wu Xihong's ongoing Gemstone Inlay Collection.
A warm Qingbai glaze covers the hand-thrown forms, while the rims and outlines retain their natural variations. Fine throwing marks and incised lines establish a quiet linear rhythm, and small red ceramic beads are set into transitions and edges as measured visual pauses.
These colored beads are not decoration added to the surface. Together with the incised lines, lobed rims, and vessel profiles, they participate in the structure itself: the beads become points, the carved marks form lines, and the open body of the vessel becomes the plane. Through this relationship, traditional forms acquire a brighter and more contemporary presence.
Beginning with Everyday Use
Originally from Chaozhou, Guangdong, Wu Xihong came to Jingdezhen in 2011 and established his own studio. He has since focused on the design and making of handmade ceramic vessels for everyday use. In his practice, throwing rings, chattering marks, incised lines, and natural variations in the clay are not over-refined; they remain as individual records of the making process.
His work begins with the experience of use: the weight of a vessel as it is lifted, the touch of the wall against the fingers, the relationship between rim and lips, and the proportions the piece assumes when placed on a table. These subtle considerations determine the final form.
The Gemstone Inlay Collection continues this approach. It retains the clarity of Qingbai glaze and the restraint of Eastern vessel traditions while introducing geometric lines and vivid points of color to create a distinctly contemporary visual order.
A Recognition of Sustained Practice
The PWS Ceramic Hub Creative Market brings together ceramic makers from Jingdezhen and beyond, offering an open platform for independent practice, public presentation, and exchange.
The Best Choice Award recognizes both the creativity and the resolution of Wu Xihong's work. It also reflects the balance that defines his practice: tradition and contemporaneity, decoration and structure, artistic expression and daily use do not stand apart, but meet naturally within the vessel.
For Wu Xihong, ceramics are not fixed forms, but an ongoing relationship between the hand, clay, fire, and everyday life.
QIWU PLUS is pleased to record this moment and share more independent ceramic practices from Jingdezhen.
